What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of movement and exercise that focuses on correcting posture and musculoskeletal balance by strengthening core control as a priority to all movement. With a strong ‘core’ – which includes abdominal, lower back and side, pelvic floor and diaphragm muscles, the body’s movement, force generation and supporting postural muscles are better aligned and more responsive to training and functional conditioning.

The Pilates chair is one of the key pieces of equipment designed and used by Joseph Pilates and the practitioners of the Pilates Method also known as Contrology. Four Main Body Areas

    • Releases hip, gluteal and hamstring tension and pressure.

    • Lower back refers to the lumbar vertebra and the sacrum-pelvis connection. Pilates movements are well-known to improve the condition of the spine and reduce back pain, especially in the lower back.
    • Thoracic spine includes the vertebra that your ribs connect to, and impacts breathing capacity and lung function. Typically, sitting for long hours creates tension in the mid-back. Health of thoracic spine is also important to offset osteoporosis with aging.
    • Neck, or cervical vertebra are the smallest and most fragile of the bones in the spine. With correct alignment, strength and flexibility, these 7 bones will allow the head to sit more effortlessly in position.
    • Sitting for long hours, the weight of the arms and shoulders draws forward, creating excess tension and stress to the neck and back muscles and ligaments. Over time this can negatively influence posture, including pressuring digestive organs, heart and lungs.
    • Circulation and flexibility in forearm, wrist and hand muscles are essential for maintaining their health. A stronger hand-arm system means you are better able to live a more active life.
